Table tips

If using table mats, lay these in position, then place large items like candles and flowers down the middle. Add cutlery, napkins, glasses and finally little extras like salt and pepper grinders, sauces, coasters and jugs of water. A guideline for laying cutlery is as follows: work from the outside in, which is to say that the cutlery with which your guests will eat their first course is placed furthest away from the mat. A small knife used to eat bread is placed to the side, furthest of all, on the right. The blades of knives lie with the sharp edge facing the mat. Pudding spoons and forks are placed either to right or left of the mat or above it.
